Ebenezer William “Wild Bill” Peyto

(1868 – 1943)

Born in Kent, England in 1868 Peyto emigrated to Canada in 1886. This colourful character was a well respected guide and later warden of the Rocky Mountains. His Knowledge of the mountains was equaled by few.

Walter D.Wilcox


Walter D.Wilcox

(1869 – 1949)

As an American student of Yale made several visits to the Rockies and formed part of the ‘Lake Louise Club’
The Club were bent on exploring , climbing and mapping the then unknown wilderness.
Wilcox also wrote the first book about the Rockies ‘Camping in the Canadian Rockies’

Led the first ascent on Mount Assinboine, would come over for each season but would return to Switzerland in the fall.

An accompalished artist, writer and photographer who was the first non native women to trave through Banff and Jasper national Parks. Author of ‘Old Indian Trails of the Canadian Rockies’. ”

Charles Fay

(1861 – 1939)

Professor Charles Fay, a president of the Appalachian Mountain Club and the founder and first president of the American Alpine Club. A distinguished climber who made his last climb at 84!

Phillip S.Abbot


Phillip S. Abbot

(1867 – 1896)

A Harvard educated lawyer who was condsidered to be a most capable climber. Sadly has the decoration of being the first person to die in the Rockies.

James Outram


James Outram *

(1864 – 1925)

Acheived numerous first ascents , originally born and raised in London England, he came to Canada in 1900. Author of ‘In the Heart of the Canadian Rockie’



* Though he is not mentioned by name in the story, his wonderful descriptions in his book provided much inspriation for the main characters narrative
